New Mexico ranks high among the states with the highest number of bicycle accidents. A study of bicycle accidents from 2009 to 2013 showed that 36 cyclists were killed and thousands have been injured as a result of crashes with other motor vehicles.
The deadly trend continues in 2016 as bicycle accidents remain one of the causes of road fatalities in New Mexico. Just recently, 2 elderly bicyclists were killed and 3 others were injured when a truck crashed into a group of elderly members of the Santa Fe Seniors Bikers.
Investigators said that the accident happened along a designated bike lane where the elderly victims were waiting. Alcohol appears to be a factor as police arrested the truck driver who was suspected of driving under the influence at the time of the accident.
Drug and Alcohol Use Affecting Road Safety
New Mexico’s high incidence of drug and alcohol abuse could be taking a toll on bicyclists and pedestrians. Law enforcers said that accidents are more likely to lead to fatal injuries when the motorists drive while under the influence.
Authorities also said that drivers need to understand the importance of sharing the road with bicycle riders and to be more attentive to the possible presence of bicycles and pedestrians along their path.
Injuries from Bicycle Accidents
Without the usual protective covering of a sedan or motor vehicle, cyclists often suffer catastrophic injuries as a result of crashes with other vehicles. Many of the critical injuries may require extensive medical procedures and extended time off work. Some may become permanently disabled to perform their usual jobs or work.
