A Texas woman suffered an upper spinal injury late last year after the vehicle in which she was a passenger collided with a semi-truck and a motor home on a busy Washington interstate.
According to police, the motor home was traveling southbound on the Interstate and swerved to avoid colliding with another car when it struck the passenger vehicle, propelling it it underneath a large box truck. Although the driver of the passenger vehicle escaped on his own, the Texas woman was pinned in the burning car until first responders were able to extinguish the flames.
After the victim was freed from the vehicle, she was airlifted to an area medical center, where she was classified as being in critical condition with a spinal injury.
Although authorities determined that alcohol did not play a role in the accident, a preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of the motor home was liable for the accident and any subsequent injuries.
Common Causes of Spinal Injury
A spinal injury can be caused by something as small as a trip, slip or call. However, most spinal injuries occur as a result of a more severe incident, such as a motor vehicle accident or an act of violence. Both continue to rank as leading causes of such injuries.
Negligence is also a key contributing factor in spinal injuries. When an individual or organization behaves in a negligent manner, it can cause devastating accidents, like those that result in severe personal injury.
What to Do If You Have Suffered a Spinal Injury
Due to the severe nature of these injuries, it is critical that, if you have suffered spinal trauma, you seek medical help immediately to assess the extent of your injury. Failure to seek medical assistance at the earliest possible opportunity can have negative consequences for any recovery, as well as reduce the chances that you can successfully recover compensation and other damages from a personal injury claim.
Once a doctor has assessed your injury, an attorney specializing in personal injury can evaluate your case and recommend a course of action that offers the best possible chance for recovering financial compensation and damages related to your injury. Such compensation is critical in helping to cover:
- Lost wages
- Medical expenses
- Lost quality of life
- Pain and suffering
Have you suffered a spinal injury due to an accident or another person’s negligence? If so, you should not delay seeking the wise legal guidance of a qualified attorney, as you may have grounds to file a personal injury claim.
